When I finally woke, it was already mid-morning. Despite last night’s disappointment, I couldn’t help but feel good about that — the first time we’d been together when the sun set, and didn’t part before it rose. We were definitely making progress. I didn’t feel so much like a plaything he could discard any more, and what thrilled me even more was that I knew I had three more days of this.
A smile stretched over my face before I even opened my eyes. I heard a chuckle from across the room, and lifted my head to look over at him.
“Somebody’s happy.”
“Sure is,” I said, shifting up to a sitting position in the bed. “I think he’s excited to see what you’ve got planned.”
“I’m sure he is,” Evan teased, coming to sit on the end of the bed. His hand came to rest on my ankle as it hung out of the bed, circling the joint with his fingertips. “He seems like the type to get pretty excited about all kinds of stuff. But he’s going to have to wait, ‘cos I ordered room service for breakfast first.”
“For me, too?”
Evan wrinkled his nose. “We’ll see how generous I’m feeling.” The warm smile on his face lit me up, and I leaned forward to beg for a kiss. Seeming to understand, he met me in the middle and pressed his lips against mine, soft and fond as a long-term boyfriend. If I wasn’t already melting into him, I sure would’ve started now.
He shifted closer, beginning to lean over me on the bed. I grinned against his lips, liking where this was going, and made space for him to cover me, trailing one hand up to sneak under his t-shirt and tease the sensitive skin of his stomach. It felt as cozy and sweet as it did sexy — but it certainly would have gone further had it not been for the knock on the door.
“Good morning. This is room service.”
Evan pulled away with one last kiss, taking a moment to keep me held down with his eyes. “Put a pin in that,” he murmured, and stood up from the bed. I turned onto my front, wrapping myself back up in the covers as he went to open the door.
“Thanks,” he started, tone free and easy. “How-”
Then, as the door fully opened, he cut himself off. I craned my neck to see what had stopped him, but it turned out that I didn’t need my eyes. As soon as the breeze reached me, I caught the scent of another shifter.
“Sorry,” muttered Evan. “Lost my train of thought. How much do I owe you?”
“That’s $27.89, sir.”
I couldn’t name the shifter at the door, nor his scent — but I did recognize him, and I could see that he was trying way too hard not to look my way as he waited for Evan to pay. I turned to face the window in the hopes that it would at least make Evan feel better, but I could hear from the tone of his voice that he wasn’t happy about this development.
